I wanted to start out with a scripture. 3 Nephi 28:23. Something that's really important in this mission is our mission vision, goals, and plans.
Vision: Converted Preach My Gospel missionaries; Unified companionships; Find, teach, and baptize families
Goals: Each companionship baptized each move call; 3 new stakes by 2016;
Plans: Study and apply the Book of Mormon and Preach My Gospel daily; Hit mission standards weekly; Three active member visits weekly
President Blickenstaff has done training with us several times on our mission vision and has tried to help us focus on each aspect. He draws a triangle on the white board and splits it into three parts, the biggest part at the base is converted Preach My Gospel missionaries. The next part above that is unified companionships. The little triangle at the top is everyone else. As we become converted and strengthen our companionship, we can help others come unto Christ and receive this message.
I read this verse in 3 Nephi and thought it perfectly described what we are doing here in this mission. It says, "and it came to pass that thus they did go forth among all the people of Nephi, and did preach the gospel of Christ unto all people upon the face of the land; and they were converted unto the Lord, and were united unto the church of Christ, and thus the people of that generation were blessed, according to the word of Jesus." As we are converted unto the Lord and are united in our companionships, we can spread this gospel and bring others unto Christ!
This week I said goodbye to Sister Tapia, she spent the weekend in ZhangHua with two other sisters and I went to Taizhong to pick up my new trainee! Her name is Sister Rumsey! She's so awesome! Her dad served in this mission when he was younger. She loves Taiwan and is really excited to be here. :) She's quiet and happy! I love serving with her, she makes things seem simple. She's still adjusting to everything here in Taiwan, but everything is going well!
We had a miracle the other night. We decided to stop by a potential investigator's house. He opened the door and looked really tired. He told us about how his father had passed away a few days earlier. When we knocked on the door, he was getting ready to go see him. I'm grateful that we were able to be there at the right time to testify to him of the plan of salvation and help encourage him during this difficult time in his life.
While traveling from Taizhong to DouLiu, we were standing near a guy who was sitting down. He kept looking at us, so I started talking to him. He told us that he was coming home from his trip to London. He went to London for just two months. The first weekend he was there, his relative brought him to the church and a month later he decided to be baptized. He left for a trip and came back and member of the church! It was really cool to hear his story and to see the power and change that comes from this gospel.
When we got to DouLiu, Sister Rumsey didn't have a helmet so we decided to continue to be obedient and walk our bikes to a bike shop to buy one. As we were on the street, a guy self contacted us, explained that he used to meet with missionaries and had a Book of Mormon. Blessings come from being obedient. Even when it's not convenient. But as we follow the guidelines that our leaders have given us, we are given more opportunities to learn and bless the people here.
When we went to visit a less active, her husband came out to talk with us. They're an older couple with grandchildren. I don't know if I've ever seen anyone walk as slowly as he did. He moved his foot just a few inches in front of the other before shifting to the other leg to move forward. One step at a time. When he got near, he started asking us if we wanted zhongzhi. It's the sticky rice that they make here. Meat, vegetables, and rice wrapped into a triangle in green leaves. He then proceeded to tell us the story of how zhongzhi came about, why we eat it. He told us this legend in a really thick Chinese accent. It was hard to understand him! But you could tell that he liked talking to us. His wife later explained that he really misses China and he knows what it's like to be away from your home, so he likes talking with missionaries.
Lots of other experiences that I want to share, but don't have time. I love you all so much! Thanks for all your prayers! I know this Church is true.
I know that Jesus Christ can help us become who we aren't. He can help us become stronger and overcome our weaknesses. Through Him, we can change. We can become who we want to become. He forgive us every time we repent. He knows and loves each of us!
Love you all! Sister Berrey
